How to Search Documents

The HTML5 viewer contains a powerful search feature which allows you to search for various types of text within text-enabled documents such as Word documents and PDF files. To see the parameters that you need to set for customizing the Search functionality, refer to the Parameters section of the Developer Guide.

Basic Search

Advanced Search options are the default behavior for the viewer. If you want to use only the Basic Search features described here, (and turn off Advanced Search), refer to the Disabling Advanced Search section in the Parameters topic.

This section covers the basic Search features within the viewer. 

  1. Click on the Gear icon and the Search tab opens:

  1. Type a word in the Search field and press Enter (or select the Magnifier icon):

You must enter a minimum of 3 characters for Search to return results. Additionally, if you perform a multi-word search, each word must be a minimum of 3 characters.
  1. The search results display under the Results tab: 
If there are more than 50 results, you can page through the list by selecting the left or right arrows.

  1. To go to a specific search results page, click on any highlighted item in the Results list:

 

Every time you perform a search, it will display under the Previous Searches section:

 

  1. You can click on a previous search result instead of retyping the term in the Search field:

  1. To remove previous search results, click Clear All:

  1. To clear the search results, click Reset on the Search tab:

Advanced Search (Default)

The Advanced Search feature provides a powerful way to refine your search so you can find what you want quickly and easily. The following example shows the Advanced Search features within the viewer:

You can use any combination of the following options to help refine your search: 

Tool

Description & Example

Match Exact Word or Phrase - For example, you can search for an exact word "home" or a phrase "go home".

If you enter an exact word, it has to be more than 2 characters.
Match Case - For example, you can search for "Home" or "home".
Whole Word - For example, you can search for "home" and the search results will return "home" and "homeschooled".
Begins With - For example, you can search for "con" and the search results will return "content" and "continued".
Ends With - For example, you can search for "ent" and the search results will return "document" and "content".

Use Wildcards - For example, you can use the asterisk (*) and search for "*@domain.com" and the search results will return all email addresses that have "@domain.com" in them (i.e., jane@domain.com). You can also use the question mark (?) and search for "ra?e" and the search results will return "rate", "rake", "race", etc. 

When you select the 'Use Wildcards' icon, it automatically disables the following icons: 'Whole Word', 'Begins With' and 'Ends With'.

The following steps demonstrate how to use the various Advanced Search features.

  1. In the Search field, enter I account it high time, click the Match Exact Word or Phrase tool, and press Enter:

  1. In the Search field, enter whenever, click the Match Case tool, and press Enter:

  1. In the Search field, enter method, click the Whole Word tool, and press Enter:

  1. In the Search field, enter che, click the Begins With tool, and press Enter:

  1. In the Search field, enter self, click the Ends With tool, and press Enter:

  1. In the Search field, enter 813.*, click the Use Wildcards tool, and press Enter:

Search Patterns

The Search Patterns drop-down menu allows you to select from a list of predefined terms:

You can select any combination of the following terms to perform a search:

You can also use the Search Patterns with the Advanced Search options (described above). The following steps show using the Search Patterns and Advanced Search together:

  1. In the Search field, enter degree and click the Match Exact Word or Phrase tool:

  1. Select the Search Patterns drop-down and select SSN and Email. Click on the Magnifier tool:

Configuring Predefined Search Using a JSON File

Predefined search options are also configurable using a JSON file. A sample JSON (predefinedsearch.json) file and sample code are included in all the sample projects. You can create a predefined JSON file that contains terms you want to search for that are 'pre-loaded' by the viewer. To see the parameters that you need to set for creating the predefined search, refer to the Advanced Search section within the Parameters topic of the Developer Guide. 

The following example shows what a predefined search looks like once it is loaded into the viewer:

Disabling Advanced Search

Advanced Search options are the default behavior for the viewer. If you want to turn off Advanced Search, refer to the Disabling Advanced Search section in the Parameters topic.
